I was at a writer's retreat (Hedgebrook a million years ago; how I wish I could go now!) and as we were chatting around the dinner table I felt this incredible — tingle? warmth? "spidey sense"? — behind me. When I turned, one of the hosts was standing there quietly just holding her hands about 6 inches behind my back. She was entirely out of my peripheral vision. My hardcore science mind was softened.
Yes to your tuned-in 'spidey sense', Adrienne! It's tricky to untangle some things like this but others, like your example, are just boom, impossible to rationalize or intellectualize. Our mammalian selves are a wonder!
